The 5-star Mont Rochelle Hotel & Mountain Vineyards in Franschhoek has introduced a series of wine tasting evenings, to assist members of its close-knit community, and in particular those within the hospitality industry, to expand their knowledge of vintages produced here.
Entitled ‘Tasting 101’, these fun and informative evenings are hosted by Mont Rochelle’s accomplished young winemaker Dustin Osborne, who, together with another prominent guest winemaker, unpacks one varietal per event.
The debut wine tasting event, held recently, was a roaring success, with guests arriving early to mingle and enjoy a welcome drink. Wines were tasted in flights of 2, with winemaker Dustin Osborne introducing the Wooded Chardonnays of Mont Rochelle, the first 3 still in barrels, before moving onto the acclaimed Rickety Bridge and Moreson Chardonnays (Franschhoek) as well as a Sur Lie from Delheim (Stellenbosch).
Says owner of Mont Rochelle, Erwin Schnitzler: ‘As an active member of Franschhoek’s hospitality community, we are always seeking new ways to enhance the reputation of our magical corner of the Cape. We believe these wine-tasting evenings will develop an innate passion and knowledge of wines from our valley, among the people who serve within our hospitality industry. These ‘ambassadors’ will then impart their knowledge to locals and guests, which could have a far-reaching, positive effect on wine tourism here.’
Tastings take place in the Country Kitchen restaurant at Mont Rochelle from 18h00 to 20h00 on designated evenings. R50 entrance per person includes the wine tasting as well as gourmet snacks.
