On the heels of its award-winning run of the past seven years, the GlenWood Chardonnay has won one of only four trophies awarded to Chardonnay at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards.
The world’s largest wine competition on basis of number of entries, the Decanter awards this year included well over 10,000 wines. The GlenWood award was amongst a haul of nine trophies and 14 golds won by South Africa.
Winemaker DP Burger spoke of the win as “particularly rewarding” - the winning Chardonnay Vigneron’s Selection 2008 being made with the least intervention of all of the GlenWood wines.
“Its starts with the way we handle the grapes from point of harvest on,” DP explains. “I only ever use wild yeast with the Chardonnay; and the natural leesy character is a hallmark of the wine. The flavours, and profile in general, are the product of our terroir.”
The GlenWood Chardonnay Vigneron’s Selection 2008 won National Champion Chardonnay at the Novarre Terroir Wine Awards 2009; and a 4½ star accolade in the Platter’s guide to wine. Awards won by previous vintages include gold at the Trophy Wine Show, the Veritas Awards and Mundus Vini in Germany; and four stars in WINE magazine, amongst others.
